Program Overview

We are a private, non-profit foundation in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Schuler currently serves over 900 high school and college Scholars in partnership with 13 high schools located throughout the northern suburbs and the city of Chicago.


The Schuler Scholar Program equips high-achieving and underrepresented students to gain access to and succeed at highly selective colleges and beyond.

Position Description

The Communications Manager is responsible for the maintenance, updating and refreshing of Schuler's communications including brand materials, online presence (website and social media), marketing materials, newsblasts, outreach and media relations. The Communications Manager reports directly to the Executive Director. As the lead staff member for communications, he/she collaborates with staff across departments and schools to develop event promotions, new marketing pieces and program strategy. This person is responsible for developing and implementing Schuler's communications strategy and flexibly adapting it to best address the program's objectives over time. The Communications Manager is also responsible for developing staff training programs on Schuler communications policies as well as professional development opportunities related to social media, This position is full-time and based in in the greater Chicagoland area, with regular visits to our Lake Forest and partner high schools.


  • Create and execute the annual strategic plan for communications
  • Oversee all communications in the following categories:
    • Prospective parent/student solicitation and background information for the Schuler Scholar Program
    • Recruiting and application materials for students/corporate partners/prospective high schools
    • Calendar development and promoting calendar events
    • Social media (developing content plan, managing Q/A on posts
  • Manage and update the Schuler website including development/design projects and regular updates with events, articles and pictures
  • Monitor, post, respond, and manage all social media platforms (currently Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube) including design elements, scheduled and real-time updates
  • Collaborate with staff members across program areas to design and manage organization-, school- and event-specific social media campaigns
  • Manage the editorial calendar and plan social media posts, website content, emails, etc. in advance with the input of school-based communication coordinators and the leadership team
  • Design, write and organize email marketing materials and manage contact list
  • Coordinate the production of new and existing marketing materials including videos and printed pieces
  • Train and guide school-based Communications Coordinators who are responsible for producing family newsletters, taking pictures of all school events, managing school-based Facebook page, and provide posts or content for Instagram
  • Edit family newsletters for schools (1-2 newsletters per school, per semester)
  • Manage media relations including story pitches and submissions as well as press relationships
  • Train staff on the Schuler's graphic and editorial standards and be the gatekeeper for compliance
  • Edit all external Schuler communication to ensure it follows editorial and graphic guidelines
  • Manage brand assets and develop a framework for staff to understand their role as brand ambassadors
  • Regularly visit partnership schools to maintain understanding of program growth, activities and changes
  • Create and update an archive of pictures, press clippers and Schuler history for internal use
  • Manage SWAG inventory, order new merchandise, and oversee distribution of SWAG to schools
  • Design or work with designer to create marketing collateral (event flyers, brochures, handouts, handbooks, etc.)

Candidate Skills

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral
  • Knowledge of digital media tools, including best practices and trends for websites, email marketing (Constant Contact), social media
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, contractors and deadlines
  • Strategic and results-oriented planning and problem solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and on a tight deadline
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, in-person and remotely
  • Ability to find compelling stories
  • Knowledge on matters relating to communications, marketing and public relations
  • Working knowledge of Spanish preferred
  • Experience using design software, specifically Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
  • Develop yearly Communications Strategy for the organization


Bachelor's degree required.


Five years of experience in a related marketing or communications field.


Commensurate with experience.
